Willem Jansz. Blaeu and his son Joan Blaeu are
the most widely known cartographic publishers of the seventeenth
century and consequently many books, articles and other scholarly
publications are devoted to them and their work.
As an introduction to this volume of Koeman's Atlantes Neerlandici,
only a summarized biography is given. For more comprehensive
information, please consult Johannes Keuning's biography, revised
and edited by Marijke Donkersloot-de Vrij, Willem Jansz. Blaeu:
A Biography and History of His Work as a Cartographer and Publisher
(1973). In 1993, Gunter Schilder published an update concerning
Blaeu research titled "The State of Research into the Cartographical
Work of Willem Jansz. Blaeu" (Monumenta Cartographica Neerlandica,
vol. IV, chap. I).
